Nitrous Oxide Abuse Associated with Severe Thromboembolic Complications

      Nitrous oxide (N2O) is gaining popularity as a party drug because of its hallucinogenic effects and low cost. Previous case reports found an association between N2O abuse and vascular complications.

      This might be caused by the accumulation of homocysteine induced by the oxidation of N2O to methylcobalamine vitamin B12 (Met-B12). Three patients with severe thromboembolic complications associated with N2O abuse are presented, all treated in our hospital in 2020.
